Save the Children launched a Mobile Library Bus Service in Bhutan on 26th December 2013. The event was graced by the City Mayor. The Mobile Library Bus Service is a Save the Children project in collaboration with the Thimphu Thromde Office. It is an extension of the Thimphu Jigme Dorji Wangchuk Public library with the overall objective to provide equal opportunity and services to all readers living far away from the library and children who do not have access to the main library that is located in Thimphu town. The bus services eight locations as a way to reach out to children who are living outside the core city area. Save the Children procured a bus and outfitted it with fixed steel book racks, a librarian’s table and chair with laptop and stocked it up with a large collection of children’s books.

Save the Children recently published 10 children’s books in the local context with financial support from the Vallavbhai and Savitaben Patel Foundation, New Jersey, USA and the Austin Hearst Foundation, New York, USA. The children’s book initaitive is the first of its kind in Bhutan and hopes to improve the quality of children’s books available in country. These books will be distributed to all government schools that cater to children at the primary level and it will also be available at Save the Children’s early child care and development centers in the country.
