The inception of 4th round of ECHO supported project titled ‘Comprehensive Disaster Management Project for Bhutan’ was held on 26th May 2017 at Le Meridien in Thimphu.
It was attended by the Hon’ble Secretary, Ministry of Education (MoE), the Director General of the Department of School Education, Executive Secretary of Thimphu Thromde, Dasho Dzongdha of Paro Dzongkhag, the Director of the Royal Education Council, Officiating Director of the Department of Disaster Management, National Director of Save the Children, senior officers from the GNHC, focal persons from the partner agencies, SC officers and the media personnel.
The project aims to build the resilience of children, their schools and the communities to impacts of disasters in Bhutan.
During the meeting, the implementing partners presented their respective key deliverables for the fourth round which are summed up into three key result areas:
Result 1: National – To support education, disaster management and monastic body stakeholders to integrate DRR and emergency preparedness into their on-going plans and rolling out DRR and response-preparedness activities.
Result 2: District and Municipality – To ensure disaster management and response-preparedness skills, capacities and resources are in place in one target district and municipality.
Result 3: School - To enable schools, monastic schools/ institutions and communities in pilot districts to have increased response-preparedness skills and capacities.
The meeting discussed how three result areas were inter-linked, cohesive and ultimately contributed to the principle objective of “building disaster resilience” for children and young people in Bhutan. It was discussed that all implementing partners would have to work in close cooperation and Department of Disaster Management, as the national coordinating agency should provide the required technical assistance and facilitation support for all the three result areas.
The Presentations was followed by the signing of the Project Agreements between Save the Children and the partner agencies.
The Hon’ble Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Director General of Department of School Education, Paro Dzongdha, Executive Secretary of the Thimphu Thromde, Director of Royal Education Council, the Officiating Director of the Department of Disaster Management and representatives from the Gross National Happiness Commission expressed their support and cooperation in implementing the project and felt that the project’s objectives and activities were timely and relevant.
